Get Beyond Your Tasks

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

By Nan S. Russell Ever hear the story of the two masons working side by side at a building site? They’re doing the same work under pretty much the same conditions. Then, one day a stranger comes along, approaches one of the men and asks him, “What are you doing?” “I don’t know and I don’t care,” replies the man, his voice brimming with irritation. All I do is slap this crummy mortar on these crummy bricks and pile them up in a crummy line. That’s what I’m doing.” The stranger returns to the building site the next day. This time he approaches the second man, asking him the same question. “Tell me,” he said, “what are you doing?” Smiling at the stranger, the man proudly replies, “Why, I’m helping to build the new cathedral.” I don’t know about you, but in my twenty years in management I met plenty of people like the first mason. People doing what they were told to do, without a greater context or purpose. People focused on what they were doing, not why they were doing it. People who clearly didn’t like their job, and clearly weren’t winning at working. When you define the purpose for your work, you create a vision behind the tasks, and that vision changes results. Think about it. What are you helping to build in your workplace? Why does your work matter? Before you say it doesn’t, think again. You have an important role or you wouldn’t be paid to do it. Of course, it’s unlikely you’ll find the purpose outlined in your job description. You see, defining your purpose is not about the tasks you do. It’s about the reason for the tasks. So if you’re an employment specialist in Human Resources, your purpose is not to hire people. That’s a task. The reason behind the task might be to increase your company’s competitive edge with exceptional people. If you’re a web designer, your job is not to build websites. That’s a task. Your purpose is in the why of it. Maybe it’s to build the corporate brand or make life easier for your customers. Look beyond your title. In one of my jobs, my purpose was to help the company develop a winning culture; in another it was to help build trust in the corporate brand so new customers would give us a try. My job title would never have told you about either. But here’s a secret. People who are winning at working don’t wait for someone else, like their boss, to define their work’s purpose. They figure it out. They define it. They create a vision for themselves. People who are winning at working can articulate how the work they do supports their organization’s vision, values, goals and objectives. They’re not satisfied doing tasks like the first mason. They’re like the second. They want to understand and contribute to the whole. They want to know that what they do at work matters. Want to be winning at working? Define your work’s purpose. And get beyond your tasks. (c) 2005 Nan S. Russell. All rights reserved. Sign up to receive Nan’s free biweekly eColumn at http://www.winningatworking.com. Cupping Therapy For Eczema

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

By Evelyn Lim I have a couple of subscribers to my regular eczema newsletter writing to me about Cupping therapy. Their Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioners have advised them to try out Cupping therapy for eczema as part of their holistic treatment. While it is too early to report if the therapy has helped them, I proceeded to find out more about this practically unknown (at least to most of us) form of treatment. Cupping therapy is an ancient form of Chinese healing, just like acupuncture is. It is the art of using plastic or glass cups with suction balls at the end placed against your skin so as to create vacuum. The vacuum causes local congestion, sucks up your skin and opens the meridians of your body. According to TCM, meridians are the channels from which energy enters and flows. Diseases and illnesses happen with the meridian channels are blocked. Opening up the channels can help speed recovery and bring about healing. Cupping therapy apparently has many benefits for the skin. It activates your skin tissues and causes them to release toxins. This detoxification therapy can also improve the condition of your varicose veins as it clears instances of blood clotting in the arteries, capillaries, and veins. Most importantly, cupping therapy is believed to stimulate your lymphatic system - the very system that produces antibodies to help fight off diseases. With these said, cupping therapy proves to be another alternative method for treating eczema, as well as other skin problems like boils. Much of this is because of the therapys ability to clear the skin of pathogens the same ones that trigger an eczema flare-up. Cupping therapy also improves blood circulation and enhances its purification. Since some theories say that certain types of eczema are caused by blood circulatory problems, Cupping therapy may just be the answer to an eczema cure. During the therapy process, the plastic or glass cups are placed on certain points of your body. The points for eczema are specifically located near your navel, just below the kneecap, at the upper tip of the spinal cord, and right above the ankle. When the plastic or glass cups used in therapy are applied in these areas, you would feel calm and relaxed. In fact, this is what you would expect to experience from the cupping therapy. You may find yourself falling asleep during the session and waking up to feeling more refreshed and energized. Cupping therapy, as an alternative eczema treatment, is definitely worth trying; since there is no cure by conventional medicine for eczema. In fact, what doctors can do for you right now are different ways to minimize the discomfort that your eczema condition brings. Other than that, there are no guarantees that total healing would happen. You would find that you get eczema outbreaks time and time again. Hence, it would appear that combining the good effects of alternative remedies with modern science may just be the best route to take if you want to cure yourself from eczema. Hydroponics Gardening - An Introduction To Hydroponics Gardening For Beginners (Part 20) Disease

Monday, August 27th, 2007

By John R. Haughton Disease Control In Plants. Is Disease Going To Destroy Your Crop? Plants, like animals are vulnerable to disease. All living things are made up of a collection of cells. Plant and animal cell structure is similar in make up, having a cell wall containing the cells internal components, such as the nucleus and the protoplast: the ‘hollow’ part of the cell where the cell conducts activities. There are many different types of plant cell, but all cells, be they plant or animal, share some basic characteristics. Because they are cellular structures, plants are subject to disruption of their cells by invading organisms. Thus at the microbial level the plant may be invaded by pathogens. These are organisms which do harm or cause the death of the plant by extracting its nutrients, damaging the cell structure, or producing toxic by-products. These pathogens can come in the form of either viruses or bacteria. Both of these types of infection will do major harm to your carefully nurtured plant. Bacteria attack the plant cells in the same way that they attack our own cells. Think back to the last time you had a cold or flu, remember how unwell you felt and how your energy was depleted. The plant also has to use a lot of energy in order to stop infection from spreading. One way in which it can fight back is by sealing off the diseased area and so blocking the pathways available to the intruding pathogen. It has been found that plants also use Salicylic Acid (the active ingredient in aspirin) as a trigger to mobilize their defences against attack. To find out more about this mechanism visit http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2003/12/031209080025.htm Unfortunately, as there are no antibiotics that can be used on plants, the pathogenic bacteria are very difficult, if not impossible, to kill. They normally enter the plant via the site of some type of injury. For this reason, if no other, it is very important to check your plants daily for signs of damage from insects and other predation, as well as physical cuts and scratches. Virus attack is usually caused in a similar manner, but these organisms are very much smaller than bacteria and can enter via the tiniest mark. Once inside the plant they live within the cells and are unable to be killed without destroying the plant. Plants are also susceptible to fungal infections. Fungi, unlike the microbial pathogens, attack using spores. These can lie dormant for long periods of time and then be triggered to come to life. They are mainly an essential and welcome addition to the garden because they break down dead and decaying material and improve the humus content of the soil. Some, however, are bad news for the grower and cause disease within the growing area. Fungi in general tend to attach to the outside of the plant and use root like structures to penetrate the plant and steal its nutrients. For this reason they are vulnerable to chemical attack and destruction. There are various preparations available for eradicating fungal attack. The best form of defence against plant disease is vigilance and meticulous hygiene. Here are a few ways in which you can help to prevent attack within your grow room or greenhouse. Always wash your hands in hot soapy water before entering the growing area. Always destroy diseased plants and all their dead leaves and debris. Always use new, or well washed and sterilized, pots when planting new plants and cuttings. Always sterilize your secateurs and equipment before use. This can be done by dipping the blades in Methylated Spirit, shaking off any excess and then lighting it. Care must be taken not to either ignite the alcohol bottle or burn the user or equipment. If you wish, you can just dip them in the spirit and allow it to dry. The use of a naked flame on knife blades etc is recommended when taking cuttings. Allow as much free air between your plants as possible. This cuts down on the transmission of fungal infections. Ban all smokers from your growing area. Tobacco is one of the biggest causes of the spread of Tobacco Mosaic Virus which attacks various plants. It is carried on the skin of people who use tobacco products. Finally always be on the look out for changes in your plants appearance. This can be the early sign of a disease. Depression, Anxiety, Stress! What Therapy Is Best For Treatment Of These Signs And Symptoms?

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

By Athlyn Green What therapy is best for depression and stress? Are prescription drugs the answer? Or can herbal remedies be a safe and effective alternative? Conventional antidepressants treat brain neurotransmitters, helping to either boost levels or prevent reuptake of these mood-enhancing messengers. When chemical imbalances are present, emotional well being is compromised. Depression anxiety stress treatment seeks to alleviate symptoms. These disorders seriously impact quality of life and need to be treated. While no one can say what therapy is best for depression and stress, science provides valuable insights. Any remedy should correct imbalances and restore functioning. Natural remedies are proving increasingly popular because of reduced risks associated with their use. How would a natural supplement compare to a prescription drug as a depression anxiety stress treatment? What substances in natural remedies influence the brain and its functioning? Siberian ginseng acts to improve the balance of important neurotransmitters (serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine). It has been shown to be effective in treating depressive disorders and inhibits monoamine in the brain, similar to a prescription monoamine oxidase inhibitor. Omega 3 fish oil contains essential fatty acids, especially DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), known for its multiple health benefits. Neuroscientists have found evidence that omega 3 DHA produces alterations in serotonin and dopamine levels. Studies confirm that when a depletion of omega-3 fatty acids occurs, depression increases. 5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan) increases serotonin levels, which is important to regulation of endocrine and brain activity essential to emotional well being. 5-HTP is a close relative of tryptophan and part of the process that leads to serotonin production. Scientists, examining research from around the world, have concluded that 5-HTP has real antidepressant properties. SAM-e is used to treat moderate to severe depressive symptoms. European research has shown it to be as effective or exceeding conventional medication, acting on the brain in a fashion similar to antidepressant drugs but generally free of troublesome effects. A good quality nutritional remedy will include vitamins and minerals, amino acids and enzymes, herbal extracts and specialty supplements. These will be formulated in a specific manner to scientifically treat illness and support essential nutritional, hormonal, and chemical balances. When asking what therapy is best for depression and stress , part of the answer lies in making sure you are consuming and absorbing needed proteins and essential fatty acids in your diet. Underlying nutritional deficiencies can lead to depression. Nutritional supplementation provides essential ingredients needed to support optimal emotional and physical functioning, providing preventative protection to guard against these maladies. Natural depression anxiety stress treatment works by strengthening weak signals, raising levels of certain neurotransmitters in the brain and improves processing of these signals by the neurons. As can be seen, your nutritional state can have a serious impact on brain functioningin fact, some scientists believe that a diet compromised in essential nutrients can lead to serious brain diseases. Conventional drugs or alternative remedies offer important treatment options when trying to determine what therapy is best for depression and stress. It is helpful to understand how these act upon the brain by providing needed components to achieve normal functioning. It is important to discuss use of any depression anxiety stress treatment with your doctorespecially if you are taking medications for other health-related conditions. He can advise you as to what may be the best approach for you. A practitioner knowledgeable in the field of botanical medicine can be a valuable partner in the healing process, offering insights into why natural remedies can be safe and effective when making a decision as to what therapy is best for depression and stress. Ayurvedic Medicine System

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

By Ryan Fyfe Ayurveda medicine is a very comprehensive medicine system that is more that 5,000 years old, that is based on a holistic medicine approach that has its roots in Vedic Culture. Inside the word Ayurveda you will see the word “veda”, which means knowledge, tells us it’s important role in ancient hinduism. Charaka Samhita and the Sushruta Samhita are two early texts of Ayurveda. There use to be a tradition of surgery associated with ayurveda. For the most part Ayurvedic therapies are herbal compounds. This is largerly due to it’s ancient roots. In later times alchemical preparations start to enter the ayurvedic pharmacopieia. Ayurveda also provides therapies to treat different vegetable and animal toxins. Examples of this are things like snake, spider and scorpion venom. In fact there is an entire branch of Ayurvedic medicine that deals with the science of toxicology. The main idea behind Ayurveda is that an organsism adapts to the food and its environment. By then introducing small quantaties of food and or medicine, the organism can adapt to it and learn to resist it. This is quite a basic principle and illustrates the complexity of the immune system and of the body as a whole. The information provided above is only a breif look at the medicine, and some of it’s qualities and idea’s. Ayurveda is an extremely interesting form of medicine; it is easy to see why it has stayed with us over the past 5000 years! How To Avoid Credit Card Fees

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

By Peter Kenny Credit cards are an almost essential part of many people’s lives, because they allow you to increase your cash flow and have more financial freedom. However, if you use credit cards too much or in the wrong way you can be stung with large credit card fees and penalties. Avoiding these fees will help you to cut the costs of using a credit card and get the most out of its benefits. If you want to know how to avoid these credit card fees then this article can help you do just that. Grace periods A grace period is the time you have to pay off your credit card debt before you start paying interest. Although many cards used to have good grace periods, these are reducing and some have none at all. This means you will start accruing interest from the moment that you make a purchase. If your card does have a grace period, then the best way to avoid extra interest charges is to pay off the balance in full before the end of each grace period. This will mean you can use your credit card without having to pay interest. Late fees One of the most expensive fees you might have to pay is for late payment. Although you might not think this will apply to you, it is very easy to be a day or two late with payment, especially if you have a lot of cards and bills. Late payment fees can be as much as 35, and if you are near the end of your credit limit could trigger other penalties such as over limit fees. Before you know what has happened you might owe 100 in fees, which is basically money wasted. To avoid these late fees, try and pay your bill by direct debit if possible, or use online banking to speed up the process of paying your bill. This will ensure that your money arrives on time. If you think you are going to be late with payment, try calling your credit card company to inform them. If they know it will be late they might be able to waive the penalty fee, especially if you usually pay on time. Annual fees Another fee that can cost you money is the credit card annual fee. Although this fee used to be commonplace, less and less cards are now charging an annual fee. Unless you have a gold or platinum card, then you really shouldn’t have to pay an annual fee. Although there will be some issuers charging annual fees, unless the benefits you get for the fee are significantly more than the fee you should find another card. More than just the fees Perhaps the biggest problem with some of these penalty fees is that if you have to pay them, it can mean more money lost for you than simply the penalty fee. For example, if you are late with payment a few times, the card issuer may remove your low interest rate. This could end up costing you a lot of money, especially if you have a large balance on your card. In order to avoid these fees, make sure you carry out your payment obligations, and also read the contract in full before signing for the card. That way you will know what the fees are in case the worst should happen. MP3 Ringtones - Inject Your Own Grove Into Your Daily Grind

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Philip_Nicosia]Philip Nicosia Mobile phones have become one of the most prominent status symbols. It has gone beyond a mere tool to make and receive calls. Its an expression of identity; a fashion statement; and with Mp3 ringtones, a way of injecting your own groove into your daily grind. An Mp3 is a compressed audio file. For years, music lovers have exchanged these files on the Internet, playing them on their PCs or from dedicated Mp3 players. But then the mobile phone companies latched on to a brilliant idea: why not use those music files as ringtones, replacing the dull and sometimes annoying clanging sound that has been the trademark alert for incoming calls. There is a wide variety of Mp3 ringtones, as wide as the range of music itself. From Mozart to Madonna, the Beatles to Britney Spears, or even commercial jingles, national anthems, cartoon themes, gospel music, nursery rhymes, even beat poetry. If youve ever hummed it, sang it, or tapped your feet to it, theres an Mp3 version waiting to be played on your phone. Mp3 ringtones can also be a good measure of how a movie or a sitcom has infiltrated into pop culture. There are ringtones that are actually snippets from famous scenes of Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings; while themes from The Brady Bunch bring smiles to anyone who has ever watched the show. But theres more. Mp3 ringtones arent even limited to just music. You can pick from a wide variety of sounds. A baby crying. A cow mooing. A woman moaning in ecstasy (hows that to break the monotony of your board meeting?).In the Philippines, when wiretapped phone calls between the president and an election commissioner revealed possibility of election fraud, fragments of that phone call were even used as Mp3 ringtoneseither as a sign of protest or to make fun of the situation. All these ringtones are easily downloadable, but for those who truly want a unique sound they can even make their own ringtones. Some record the voices of their children. Others save romantic missives from a loved one. People also record the laughter of friends, or a fragment from a childs Christmas performance, or even a beloved pets barking. While other people may not appreciate the Mp3, the fact that it has a personal meaning makes those ringtones music to the owners ears. So why do people use Mp3 ringtones? The same reason they pick the shirt they are wearing: it reflects the owners personality. When they say my phone, they mean it in more ways than one. Sociologists say that people are driven to express identities in external symbols. It is part of our communal nature: this is me, this is the group I belong to. Primitive societies wore jewelry beads and animal teeth; some developed tattoos; and later on, developed clothes and other accessories. The phone is no different. Like feathers on a tribesman cap, it signals to everyone else who we are. Small Business Marketing: 10 Steps to Help You Plan for a Successful 2006

Thursday, August 16th, 2007

By Debbie LaChusa As 2005 winds down, many small business owners will find themselves naturally looking back at the past year and evaluating how well their business did. It’s normal to look back at what we’ve accomplished and also at the long list of things we intended to do but never got around to. If business was good, that’s great. But why not take steps now to make sure 2006 is even better. To make sure you actually accomplish all of your intentions so you’re not sitting around a year from now, lamenting all the things you wished you’d had time to do. If business was less than great, there’s no better time than right now to sit down and create a marketing plan, or as I like to call them a “Success Plan” for 2006. Because when you have a plan to follow you’ll be more likely to actually follow through on all of your ideas and turn them into new clients and cash flow. So what steps can you take right now to create the success you want in 2006? Here’s a list of 10. Set an intention right now to do one or two of these steps every week between now and December 31st and you’ll be ideally positioned for success in 2006. 1) Evaluate your 2005 goals and how close you came to achieving them. 2) Evaluate the current status of your business. How close or far away is it from what you want it to look like. This may be in terms of the size of the business, the number and type of clients you’re servicing, the revenue your business is generating, the type of work you are doing, and even the number of hours you’re working and whether or not you have any help. 3) Evaluate each and every one of the marketing activities you undertook over the past year. How did they work? What did they cost you? How many clients or how much revenue did they generate in return? 4) Take a look at the clients or customers you’re serving. Are they the people you thought you’d have as clients when the year started? Or are they different? Are they your ideal clients, or are they just the clients you ended up with. 5) Review your 2005 marketing budget.Did you spend more or less than you planned? If you didn’t keep track of your spending, take the time to go back now and put together a summary of what you spent on marketing. This combined with the results you got and how close you came to reaching your goals will be necessary information for creating a 2006 success plan. 6) Set new goals for 2006 and create a vision of the success you’d like to achieve. 7) Establish your marketing budget for the year.Make sure it’s money you have available to spend on marketing and make the commitment now to invest it in your business. 8) Determine the marketing activities you are going to use in 2006.Refer back to your 2005 results and select those activities that delivered the best return on investment. This may mean deleting a few of the activities you used this yearand adding some new ones to test. 9) Map out your marketing activities on a calendar.Include prep-work on the calendar so you have a true map of what you need to do each month to stick with your plan. 10) Determine a method for tracking each and every marketing activity in your plan. And establish one day every month for reviewing your results, both for your individualmarketing activities and toward your overall 2006 goals. If you take the time to go through these 10 steps now and create a marketing plan for 2006 you will greatly improve your chances for success. So start now, take just one or two steps a week, create your plan and watch your business grow in 2006. Skin Problems? May Be A Lack Of Nutrients

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007

By Michael Russell Vitamins and proteins are not the only things people can use in their skin care regimen. All of the nutrients can play an important part as well. Nutrients are the chemical components of food that supply the body with materials that can be transformed into energy including heat and activity; that maintain, repair and build body tissue; and that regulate all body processes. Nutrients are grouped into five classes: vitamins, proteins, (both of which have been discussed in previous articles), minerals carbohydrates, fiber, water and fats. There are some less known nutrients that can play an important part in helping with good skin care. However, it is important to know the two threats that we need to protect the skin against. Cigarette smoke and the sun are the two biggest threats to the skin. They can cause free-radical damage (damage created when cells oxides) to the skin. People who smoke can wrinkle years faster that people who don’t smoke. Smokers can have premature wrinkled skin especially around the mouth. Non-smokers should cut down on their exposure to smoke as much as they can. Smokers should beef up on their intake of Vitamin C to help slow down the free-radical damage to their skin. The sun has ultraviolet rays that can erode the elastic tissues in the skin causing premature wrinkles. Regular exposure to the ultraviolet energy of the sun can promote free radical in the fats of the skin cell membranes. Years of unprotected sun exposure can cause some skin cancers. Wearing protective sunscreen can help the outside of the skin. A good, healthy diet can help the skin from the inside and reduce the free-radical damage. The less known nutrients that can help with good skin care are Silicon, Grape Seed Extract, Royal Jelly, L-Cysteine and Gamma-Linolenic Acid. Silicon produces a chemical reaction in the body that hooks collagen and elastin together tightly, which gives them their strength and resilience. Silicon can be found in root vegetables, unrefined cereal products, seafood, chicken skin and whole grains. The daily intake of about 20 mg to 45 mg can be easily gotten from eating the above foods without any extra supplementation. Grape Seed Extract has the ability to strengthen, cling and protect cellular proteins including the ones found in the skin. It also increases skin collagen resistance to enzyme degradation. Grape Seed Extract is a free radical fighter and can be found in foods like dark grape juice and wine. The active component found in Grape Seed Extract can also be found in foods like cranberries, citrus peels and peanuts. Suggested daily dose is about 150 mg broken down into 3 doses of 50 mg each. This is only some of the lesser known nutrients. More will be discussed about Royal Jelly, L-Cysteine and Gamma-Linolenic Acid (GLA), their sources from different foods and their recommended daily doses in the next article.
