By Christopher J Williams Many people are concerned at the excess flab that seems to accumulate even more at this time of year, now that the festivities are over and life begins to drift back to normality. Over indulgence is a luxury that many people allow themselves to afford at this time of the year, when the truth is that it is usually people who can ill afford to permit themselves that luxury, and they spend many months thereafter trying to get rid of the excess stomach fat that has accrued over the festive period. However, for some people, knowing how to get rid of stomach fat is a life long search, with many diets and drug and herbal remedies having been stuffed into their already abused gastric regions! For some people, fighting the flab has been a battle that they feel they are never going to win, and in waves of self-pity many actually resort to comfort eating and only inflame and inflate their stomachs even more. Having been a keen sports person in my teens, I enjoyed many years of body building and muscle toning. At the time it was a great lifestyle and my mid areas were perfectly toned and muscled. As the years drag by and family life and the toils of living take over, many people, like myself, neglect their bodies, even abuse them, and large fatty areas begin to appear where previously toned abs were proudly displayed. In later years I have learned and accepted that much of the fat that accrued in my abdominal area was due to nothing more than my own over eating of all the wrong kinds of foods. Quick fix slimming remedies, diets, dietary pills and all kinds of quack remedies really are of no use to a person when they are able to take stock of their own situation and admit that the blubber and stomach fat that has accrued is down to nothing more than their own bad eating habits, lack of exercise, and over indulgence in fast foods and fatty foods, just like my own situation was. Admittedly for some people, this is not always the case and some bodily function, illness, or glandular ailment has contributed to their excess weight and stomach flab, but these people are in the minority case. In American society today a shocking number of adults, and children, are over-weight for no other reason than the life styles that we choose to live. Poor eating habits, over indulgence in fast foods, greasy laden fries and hamburgers, laughably washed down with ‘diet’ coke (dont you just love the irony of that!), and lack of exercise all contribute to the blubber which gathers in our abdominal regions. Sadly the truth is that many of us really have contributed to our own excess flab, and in panic we turn to places like the internet to hunt down ways to show us how to get rid of stomach fat, and melt away all that excess fat! There is however a much simpler answer, and this can be a new years resolution for all of us who do suffer from excess fat, over-eating and general over indulgence in all the wrong kinds of foodstuffs. Here are some simple suggestions for how that can be achieved: Cut down on our fatty foods.Eat more vegetables, especially greens! Before engaging in any form of intense physical exercise you may wish to consult your doctor for a physical checkup. The doctor may check your blood pressure and advise on how much exercise you can do. If you are diabetic you will be advised accordingly. You can ask the doctor for your ideal weight to height ratio. If you have not been physically active for a long time then you should start gently. Perhaps begin with a few minutes each day for a week. You can then add a few more minutes of exercise every couple of days. Once you feel more capable then you should exercise for 30 minutes continuously everyday. Activity causes your muscles to burn up surplus energy in the form of blood sugar. When all blood sugar to used up your body will turn to the energy stored in your fat cells. Do not expect miracles to occur in the first few days of exercise. You may lose a tiny amount of weight within a week. This can be from excess water in your system. Using a measuring tape around your waist, you can determine if there is indeed weight loss. You can increase the intensity of the exercise every week to increase the energy burn rate. Walking up and down stairs instead of using the elevator or lift is good idea. Walking up a gentle incline can help the weight loss. Wear a small backpack with a light weight such as a small book. This should help you exercise more intensely. Make sure you drink about 8 glasses of water each day. This can help supress your appetite. Eat a balanced diet of fresh fruit, vegetables and protein. Avoid eating processed food products such as cakes, cookies and candy. After exercising you can eat a small snack of fruit such as an apple or banana to help you recover. Carbohydrates in the form of bread or pasta is ok in moderation. The secret is in the portion size. Keep it small. Meal size should be the size of two fists held together. Protein helps you feel fuller faster. Don’t drink water during your meal. It will dilute your digestive juices and affect your digestion. By Glenn Cohen Change happens when you gain awareness and understanding of your emotional wounds and break your denial of their existence and the impact they have on your life and relationships. This process requires you to identify your fears, subsequent distorted perspectives, and unrealistic expectations. It is vital to understand how the twin pillars create emotional triggers and how the triggers lead to reactivity. The next step is to consider and adopt new perspectives and expectations. Assume absolute personal responsibility for your reactive behaviors and accept the truth of how your behaviors create conflict. Then, create a plan and make a commitment to change. Dont worry, the process is not as difficult as it may sound. For outwardly reactive people, the plan should include an internal check-in that identifies the physical sensation of reactivity. Most people feel a ball of energy in the pit of their stomach rising up as it moves closer to being released. For inwardly reactive people it is common to feel overwhelmed by a wave of emptiness and heaviness. It is like energy draining out of your body and loving feelings melting away, accompanied by an urge to sink deep inside. Regardless of the type of reactivity you experience, when an everyday issue, situation, or problem triggers you, try to recognize the warning signs of trouble early enough to stop the reactivity and subsequent conflict. When you begin to feel the sensations of reactivity, consider that you possibly have a distorted perspective or unrealistic expectation and are not distinguishing between past pain and present reality. Understand that it is simply fear stemming from an emotional wound and allow yourself to think of new perspectives. It is important to recognize when you are triggered early enough to insert some safe space between emotions and reactivity. It is helpful to learn how to self-soothe before the emotions reach their maximum threshold. Effective self-soothing techniques include deep breathing, meditation, progressive muscle relaxation, exercise, taking a walk and taking a time-out to remove oneself from the source of the trigger. In addition to fostering healthy and peaceful relationships, learning to self-soothe and circumvent emotional reactivity leads to increased self-respect, feelings of empowerment, improved physical health, and a peaceful soul. Have you ever noticed that when you take a time-out from escalating conflict and re-direct your attention elsewhere, later the issue that was the source of the conflict no longer holds the same power or significance?
