Satisfy Your Thirst for Fishing - 3 Parts to the Fishing Cocktail

By Michael Kilby Everyone who fishes either for sport or fun knows that while fishing itself is simple, catching fish is not. There are times when we think we have it all figured out, then days go by without as much as a nibble. What has happened, did we lose our expertise? Are the fish getting smarter? Maybe its the weather. In fact there are many factors that weigh into whether we are catching fish or just passing time. Even though there are many factors, I would argue there are only 3 main parts to pouring ourselves the perfect fishing cocktail. Since drink names such as Sex on the Beach and Fuzzy Navel have already been taken, may I suggest Fish on a Hook? The drink may be made with any combination of the ingredients. They do not have to be of equal parts, but to make a Fish on a Hook all 3 must be present. So put your barkeepers hat on and lets start. The first part of our drink consists of bait selection. Now I can hear you out there, I can think of at least 10 factors which go into catching a fish. This is true, but many are just sub-factors of choosing the main ingredients. For part 1 of our drink, we must ask questions like; Who is our customer? and What do they like? If our cocktail is being served in a high class restaurant or club, we need to use top-shelf liquor only. This will of course cost more, but thats what these customers want. On the other hand, if were drinking at the local pub and money is of concern, cheaper brands of the same liquor may do the trick. Some will like their drinks made strong, others will want a better tasting, yet lower in alcohol version. Now, what does any of this have to do with the price of tea in china? KNOW YOUR FISH. Does it like jumping for top-water lures, or picking at slow moving soft baits across the bottom? Whats its main source of attraction? Some fish are attracted by sight to bright flashy objects, while others tend to follow their nose. Not only knowing what the fish like, but knowing when they like it, as well as adjusting for water temperature and weather conditions are also important factors to consider. A little research goes a long way in picking the right bait. This is a great start but were not quite ready to start drinking yet. Part two of the Fish on a Hook recipe is technique. There are many techniques available in creating the perfect drink; Shaken not stirred is just one. Drinks can also be made hot, cold, or frozen. Fishermen also use varying techniques in their efforts. Whether quick popping a top water lure, fly fishing, or slow reeling through the vegetation, many of the same sub-factors which go into bait selection are also relevant here. We must consider the aggressiveness of the fish, whether they are active or lethargic. Their location,in open water or along the bank,is important in choosing the appropriate technique. What bait am I using? is of course another important element. Getting thirsty? Some will say you dont need this final part to make a Fish on a Hook, that if you poured the first two parts just right, number 3 is unnecessary. I beg to differ. The third and equally important ingredient is luck. There I said it. Good or bad, weekend warrior or professional angler, everyone needs a little. Ever been fishing with a buddy using the same bait and same technique, yet you are catching fish and they’re not, or vise-versa? Whats the difference? Is it that theres more fish on his side of the boat or a few feet down the bank? Perhaps, but I say it is luck. It’s either good for you or bad for him, but it’s luck just the same. Some need half a glass, some just a splash to take the edge off, but like I said, everyone needs a little. There you have it. Mix bait selection with technique,add some luck ,and there you have a perfect Fish on a Hook. Tasty isnt it? “Wait a minute,” you say, “it cant be that easy.” What about fishing gear? What about my fish finder and GPS? What about my rod selection and reel choice? Valid questions all. I just make the drinks; you have to decide how to serve them. Free Knitting Patterns and Reusing Old Yarn

By Brenda Cleland I love finding free knitting patterns and to go along with that I love to save money reusing old yarn. Have you ever looked at a sweater and thought that you don’t like the style anymore but you love the color or the texture of the yarn. Well, I have. Maybe I never really liked it in the first place. Its time to dig out a great free knitting pattern and re-use the yarn. The first thing I do is search through my free knitting pattern collection to find one I like and see if the sweater I am reusing is big enough for the new knitting pattern. First I unstitch the seams. Snip carefully with scissors so you don’t cut through the actual knitting. First you need to find the end where the knitting was cast off. This makes it very easy to just pull and unravel each row. It helps if you have a helper with their hands about a foot apart, or you can use the back of a chair to wind the yarn around. Keep doing this until you come to the end of that piece of yarn. Tie another piece of yarn around the yarn bundle in two places so it doesn’t tangle. This yarn will be very wrinkled, would be difficult to knit with and would give a bumpy texture to your knitting if used like this. I have had some success with washing the yarn in bundles (washable yarn only of course). I wash yarn as usual leaving the yarn dripping wet. I hang the yarn over the back of an old chair outside, or inside in the bath tub in the winter. You can use anything that will hang. A stick across two boxes will work. The weight of the water will unwrinkle the yarn. After it is dry I hand wind the yarn into balls or use my yarn winder. I prefer the yarn winder as it allows the yarn to be pulled from the middle which stops it rolling and catching but if you don’t have one then hand winding it is. Wash out and defrost your fridge at least three times a week. Clean up spillages immediately. Keep all cupboards, pantries and larders spotlessly clean. Check regularly for signs of mice, rats, cats, birds, cockroaches, ants and such pests. Deal with them promptly. In professional kitchens, shelving should never be against the wall. Leave a space of thirty centimeters so that you can easily see trails of mice or rats. Do not keep highly perishable foodstuffs in the larder, put them in the fridge. E.G. Eggs, milk, cheese, meats. Store prepared food separate from uncooked food. Keep all cleaning chemicals and equipment out of food storage spaces. Put them in a special cupboard under lock and key. Food storage spaces should be designed to stand against interior walls only. This will serve to ensure that these places will always be cool and dry. Do not run water or drainage pipes through places where food or food utensils are stored. Keep your stores dry. Be sure to rotate your supplies thoroughly. Remember this saying; last in, last out. Keep animal feed separate from human food! Keep vegetables and eggs in a separate storage area but failing that keep all root vegitables at the very bottom of the fridge in suitable closed containers. It is always pleasant to sit in an air-conditioned room, with light pouring in on all sides - but not too brightly - and a view of grass, garden, or trees, but free of the oppressive heat or annoying insects that can sometimes ruin a perfect day. There are roughly five kinds of sunrooms, and what differentiates them is the type of roof that they have. Your ‘average’ sunroom consists of window glass all around, of course, all of the same size, and a flat roof, usually of some opaque material so that the sun is not actually visible through the roof. The ‘Cathedral’ sunroom is one in which the ceiling is vaulted. This makes the room appear very large, and allows for design features like front trapezoid transoms to really enhance the look of the room from both inside and out. A vaulted ceiling also helps in preventing the build-up of rain or snow. The ’split-level’ sunroom, or California, as it is also known, has a roof that is somewhat staggered. One half of it slopes upward, the other half slopes up to meet it at not quite as sharp an angle, and glass panels bridge the distance between the two. This allows more light to enter the sunroom and of course gives the sunroom a striking look. The ’solarium’ is a room in which both the walls and ceiling are made of glass, and the roof has a curved glass eave…which makes it a nice room in which to watch the stars at night, as well as enjoying the sunlight during the day. Finally, the ‘Conservatory’ is a room with a rather old-fashioned, ornate look to its frame, designed in an Edwardian or Victorian manner, with a glass ceiling as well. The frames for the sunroom can be made of any material, from wood to aluminum to vinyl, but you’ll want to get the best quality possible for your budget. A sunroom represents a significant investment in your home - the value of your home will probably go up at your next assessment, as will your taxes. Great care must be taken with the glass quality. You don’t want unfiltered sunlight bearing down into your room. The white glare will make seeing extremely uncomfortable. You’ll want windows that block out most of the sunlight, as well as the harmful UV rays which fade furniture. You’ll want windows that are insulated and that can keep both hot and cold weather out…and warm temperatures in. What To Look For In Sunroom Design There are quite a few companies on the web who have galleries of their sunrooms. Take a look at these. Do you have a friend, family member, co-worker or neighbor who has a sunroom? Talk to them about it. Ask them about their problems. (And if they haven’t owned their sunroom for a complete four seasons, ask other people who have.) The type of sunroom you choose will depend on the type of person you are. If you want a quiet room to retreat and relax, you’ll perhaps want a conservatory. If you want a room where kids can gather and play, your ‘average’ sunroom might be the best bet. However, as we go into the twenty-first century where correspondence between two people miles apart can be done faster through email, stamp collection has already been forced into the background. The presence of electronic mails has given stamp collecting two implications: (1) that although the number of stamp collectors have diminished, (2) the value of old and rare postal stamps have acquired more value now than ever before. This is good news to stamp collectors around, especially those who have the rarest and largest stamps in their collection. However, some perennial stamp collectors are faced with the question: what to do with common, ordinary stamps? Throwing common or ordinary stamps are out of the question. Throwing stamps away will definitely not do for the avid stamp collector no matter how common the stamp may be. Common and cheap stamps cant also sell for much. Thus, the question persists: what to do with old, common, ordinary stamps? Here are two easy projects for the stamp collector. Framed Stamp Collage For the framed stamp collage project you will need scissors, glue or paste, loads of common or ordinary stamps and a large cardboard. You can choose to cut your cardboard to an irregular or desired shape or simply choose to leave it rectangular. This cardboard will serve as your base for the collage. Simply paste and position old, common or ordinary stamps onto the cardboard. It is recommended to use same-sized stamps to achieve even sides. If there is not enough same-sized stamps to use, start gluing the differently sized stamps from the center of the cardboard going outward. Make sure that you do not use too much glue. This will result to unevenness on the collage surface. Color schemes may add an interesting detail to your stamp collage. You may use warm-toned stamps at the left moving to cool-colored stamps into the right. You may even use a pattern for the stamps. The possibilities are endless. Imagine what you want to see in a framed stamp collage hanging on your living room and work on it. Once all the stamps are pasted with your desired pattern on the cardboard, you can now have it framed in your local framing shop and hung on to your living room. As a stamp collector, you will be able to express your identity subtlety and at the same time, add character to your living room. Stamp Collage Place mats and Coasters If you want to use your old common and ordinary stamps to create character in the dining room, you can also do so. The materials and process for this second project is very much the same as the first. Only, the cardboard serving as the stamp collage base, or, in this case, the place mat or coaster, will have to be cut according to the size you want. Paste in the stamps onto the cardboard according to the pattern that you want. Again, make sure to apply just enough glue to keep the collage surface even. To add an antiqued-tone effect, dabble a few granules of coffee or sponge the surface with coffee. Once your place mats and coasters are nice and dry, it is time to bring them to your local laminator and have your place mats and coasters laminated for use. Years and years as a practicing artist have taught me to waste not, want not. There is beauty and functionality even in the most mundane, ordinary, unexciting things of everyday. It is up to the artist in you to see the potential and make the mundane special, the ordinary extraordinary and the unexciting, exciting. And although anyone can argue by saying that he or she is anything but an artist, these simple projects will hopefully encourage you to waste not on your old common stamps and want not in the simple delights of stamp collage and stamp collecting. Long Term Green Tea Consumption and Body Fat

By Jon Stout Many people find that they gain weight as they get older. It seems to be a fact of life for many of us; as we age we put on a few pounds. Its no secret that our metabolism starts to slow down as we age; even as early as age 30. However, there does seem to be a simple secret weapon that can prevent the pounds from creeping on as we get older. Its no secret that Asian countries have far lower incidences of overweight and obesity than most other parts of the world. And, even as they age, Asians dont seem to put on the age related pounds that plague many cultures. And, of course, its no secret that Asians drink large amounts of green tea. And, there seems to be a connection between these two facts. Green tea has been reported to have many health benefits, including preventing disease and weight gain. Green tea consumption has been shown to reduce the risk of many forms of cancer, lower cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of heart disease. Green tea has also been shown to help regulate insulin, which may help prevent or control diabetes. Other studies have shown that green tea can help with weight loss, as it seems to speed the metabolism and promote fat loss. Green tea seems to have a unique ability to promote thermogenesis, or fat burning. For these reasons, it seems that being a lifelong green tea drinker may mean that you have less chance of putting on a few pounds each year as you get older. In addition to the abundant anecdotal evidence available by comparing the statistics on obesity in Asian countries to that of European and North American countries, there is also quite a bit of research to back up the theory that drinking green tea regularly over a period of years may lead to lower weight and less body fat. One particularly interesting study on this subject was conducted by the Department of Family Medicine, National Cheng Kung University Hospital in Taiwan. This study looked at over 1200 subjects, both male and female. They compared the tea drinking habits of the participants and evaluated their percentage of body fat and body fat distribution based on waist to hip ratios. Waist to hip ratios are important because we know that fat carried around the hips and waist are more likely to lead to heart disease than fat carried on other places on the body. The study concluded that tea drinkers were less likely to have an unhealthy percentage of body fat, and were more likely to have positive waist to hip ratios. In fact, those participants who had been tea drinkers for more than 10 years showed an average of 19% less body fat and a waist to hip ratio of 2.1% less than that of non-habitual tea drinkers. But even those participants who had been habitual tea drinkers for just six months showed improved statistics over those participants who were not habitual tea drinkers. This study denoted several factors that appeared to have either positive or negative effect on a persons body fat percentage and body fat distribution. The factors they rated were as follows: Smoking Smoking was associated with higher body fat and higher waist to hip ratio. Age Older Age was associated with higher body fat and higher waist to hip ratio. Body Mass Index Higher body mass index was associated with higher body fat and a higher hip to waist ratio. Pre/post menopausal Pre-menopausal women were more likely to have a lower percentage of body fat and a lower waist to hip ratio than post menopausal women. Habitual Tea Drinking Habitual tea drinkers had lower waist to hip ratios and lower percentages of body fat. Physical Exercise Those who exercised regularly had lower percentages of body fat and lower waist to hip ratios. So, as you can see, there are several lifestyle factors that affect whether or not your weight creeps up as you age. Of course, age itself is a factor we cant control, as is going through menopause. However, what we can learn from this study is that getting regular exercise, refraining from smoking and drinking tea regularly throughout your life can help you avoid gaining weight as you get older. Adding green tea to your diet is a simple way to help protect your health and prevent weight gain. As more and more research has revealed green teas health benefits, it has become easier to find. Today, green tea can be found in loose or bag form for brewing at home and bottled form for those who want convenient chilled green tea. Even those trendy coffee houses now offer a green tea selection on your menu. And, if you cant get enough of a dose of green tea by drinking it, there are green tea supplements on the market that carry the anti-oxidants of green tea in pill form.
