Law School Students Often Say They Want to Help People

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

By Lance Winslow I recently started taking a survey as I travel what is left of our nation from the over letigiousness terrorist attacks from lawyers; I ask students in coffee shops studying law why they want to be a lawyer. They have to reasons; One, to make money and two, to help people. Yes it is true; law School students often say they want to help people. When I discuss this with these young folks they say, I want to help people. If someone slips on a banana peal outside of business and breaks their leg, I can collect for them? What? I say? No matter if the company is a third generation steak house with all you can eat ribs and Porterhouse steaks? No bananas have been sold there in over 45 years? And that the life savings of the couple who owns the establishment has two kids in college and one who needs soccer shoes and all that need health coverage which is also thru the roof for the same reason? Tort Law. We need to address this problem and I like some of Ceasars ideas the best, we need this in place now, not later, if this were to be proposed in Congress today? Fat chance since the Congress is mostly made up of lawyers and they get big bucks from the trial lawyer lobbyists. But if it were to be voted on you would see the biggest onslaught of high dollar lawsuits to be filed ahead of such enactment of law to get it while it is still available. Yep, and this is our idea of reality? Get it while you can, sue every company into bankruptcy? No wonder people are moving jobs to India, China, etc. I would too. To get away from the tort law issues, much safer there. We are our own worst enemy, because we refuse to live in reality, instead choosing to live in front of the curtain of OZ, in a promised utopia that is non-existent and not yet earned. If we want our country back and make this the model for the world, then shouldn’t we fix these issues of tort law and establish a livable and acceptable tort reform policy that is based on reality and fairness. You know that justice thing we as Americans are always talking about? The sooner we have tort reform the faster we can get back to our promise to the people. We need not destroy all we are and all we have built based on the pie in the sky promise of the regulation of morality by those who abuse, extort and hijack the law for their own personal gain at the expense of ourselves and our ancestors. Too harsh of comments? I think not. I certainly would like to hear from others on this issue. Think about it. “Lance Winslow” - Online Think Tank forum board. Feelings: How to Help the Man You Love Learn to Express His Feelings

Monday, May 26th, 2008

By Kari Joys Women often complain that their husbands or relationship partners never express their feelings. Often they get angry thinking that their partners don’t have feelings and don’t really care. In my work as a psychotherapist, I help men learn how to express their feelings every day so I know from many years of experience that men do have feelings and that they can definitely learn to express them. Since we’re learning that healthy relationships require that men and women learn to discuss their feelings with each other, I believe that we, as women, need to help our partners overcome the old programming that says real men don’t show their feelings. I’ve put together some tools you can use if you want to help your partner learn how to show you more of what’s really in his heart: 1. Feelings: Remember that your partner does have feelings even if he doesn’t know how to express them. He’s just been trained and programmed not to show them. Show him what a healthy relationship is by talking about your feelings without attacking him. 2. Feelings: Show him that you love him and that you’re on his side every day. You can do this in lots of little ways, like hugging him hello and goodbye, complimenting him everyday about something you value or appreciate about your relationship and by doing little things to show him you care. 3. Feelings: Ask him open-ended questions and listen without interrupting. If he starts to talk and you interrupt him or make him wrong in some way, he’ll probably shut you out and go into his cave. Healthy relationships require both that both partners really listen to each other. 4. Feelings: Paraphrase back to him what you heard him say with feeling words. For example “When you talk about your job, you sound frustrated and overwhelmed.” Then let him tell you whether you heard him accurately or not. Paraphrasing what your partner says will benefit your relationship because it helps you both to slow down and really understand each other. 5. Feelings: When you have feelings you want to share with him, use the formula, “When you… I feel… because I need… and I’d appreciate…”a. “When you” is completely non-judgmental, and non-evaluative.b. “I feel” is a message about yourself and your personal feelings, like “I’m scared” or “I’m hurt.”c. “Because I need” is a universal need, not “I need you to change.” It’s what anyone would need in that situation, like “I need compassion,” or “I need understanding” or “I need support.”d. “I’d appreciate” is a specific, do-able request, like “I’d appreciate if you would call and let me know if you’re going to be later than we planned.” Utilizing these simple steps will help you learn to discuss difficult relationship issues without attacking each other. 6. Feelings: Treat everything your partner shares with you as sacred ground! Never, ever use his feelings against him when you’re angry. Your relationship could be permanently damaged by using your partner’s feelings against him! 7. Feelings: Always thank him for trusting you–even if you’ve known him for 30 years! Letting him know how much you appreciate it makes him want to try again next time. Your relationship will be so much better and stronger when you can discuss your feelings with each other in healthy ways! 2006 Kari Joys It’s never too late to learn how to deal with your feelings in healthy ways! The New Marketing Manager & Exhibit Design

Saturday, May 17th, 2008

By Julia O’Connor The question is - Our new marketing manager just spent $65,000 for a new trade show exhibit. She loves it, but it doesn’t seem to draw people in. Are there lessons here for us? There are different scenarios but the main problem is - there is a new Marketing Manager. New broom sweeps clean. Wants to start all over. It does not work. What went wrong?”There are five basic concepts to understand before changing exhibit designs. 1) DO THE MARKETING PLAN BEFORE DESIGNING THE BOOTH. Remember - Form Follows Function. Sometimes new managers come with great ideas, sometimes more time would have allowed a better integration of exhibit form with marketing message. Do a marketing plan for Each Show. WHY? Because each show will draw different attendees with different expectations and you need to focus on the attendee, not your ego. All marketing messages must be integrated, so a new exhibit with an old message - or vice versa - is jarring to your audience. 2) NEVER DESIGN ANYTHING IN A VACUUM. Let the folks who are going to work the booth have input. Experience on the floor is invaluable when upgrading or designing a new exhibit. WHY? They know the problems with lack of storage space, lost keys, theft, crowded demo areas, poor lighting, off-message graphics, difficult set-up, and shipping disasters. 3) IT’S TOUGH TO BE A MISSIONARY. Way-out designs may scare away prospects because you do not look like “their” type of company. Sure its fun to explode on the floor with something really fantastic, but unless the exhibit matches the image the attendee has of the company, unless it is on-message, then some potential clients will shy away. WHY? There is a psychology to the trade show and attendees whether first time or experienced come with desires of comfort. Trade shows are quick, intense and sometimes overwhelming in assaults on the senses. Attendees do not want to spend time and the psychic energy to figure out strange exhibits. 4) DO NOT USE AN EXHIBIT WITH A POOR FLOOR PLAN. Have you ever been to an exhibit where entering was part of the mystery? Or where to go next, or the demo stations are in a secret place, or you just cant find people to answer your questions? Never design an exhibit that is a maze or barrier to people. WHY? Most people will not take time to figure out something new. They want the option to get in, get out or linger at their leisure. Note the demo and conference areas require privacy. The most important aspect of a good exhibit is Good Signage. Clear. Easy to read and multi-lingual when to your advantage. Especially important in today’s necessity for ADA and diversity awareness. 5) MAYBE IT’S NOT THE NEW DESIGN. There are many reasons a new exhibit does not live up to dreams. One of the most obvious, yet overlooked, is the staff. Do you send the same folks? Are they tired, resentful, bored, boring? Enthusiasm - before and during the show - can overcome many design flaws. WHY? You must view each show as a new show and that requires a new outlook each time. The fresher and better selected the staff, the better the message. The Center for Exhibition Industry Research www.CEIR.org estimates that 85% of the reason for a sale is the staff in the booth. An exhibit only draws people to your space. Its the staff that makes or breaks the introduction, discussion, follow-up and sale. Spiff up your whole presentation with training before each show to help you make better design and staffing decisions. Jewish Matchmaking Services

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

By Tatiyana Wiseman How do you even begin searching for someone who shares the same values of your Jewish religion and Jewish traditions? As a Jewish single, you have to not only narrow down other singles from not Jewish to just Jewish. But, also you have to figure out how Jewish is that someone is?Unfortunately, all Jewish groups are separated under different categories: Orthodox, Conservative, Reformed and many others. So, even though you want someone with the same beliefs, you still have to stick with your own kind so to speak. All Jews are not created equal. Isnt that ironic?Jewish people are considered minority, and they still need to be separated for their own traditions and laws they created among themselves. Some of these laws were invented by people, and not by scriptures.Understandably enough, this kind of separations will make their lives much easier while making a home, and razing childrenSo, what does the Jewish single do to find a match in their specific group? Join the Jewish Matchmaking Service that accommodates and validates their personal principals.Should this make your research of finding a true love easier? May not necessary be the case. However, it may give you the sense ofbelonging and comfort. While you meet someone in yourcircle of standards, you will be able to immerse in to the actual matchmaking part much more naturally. From my personal experience, joining the Jewish Matchmaking Service was a great blessing! It made me feel great to be around my own people, gave me contentment and joy to know that there are otherswho desire the same things as I do.And even though, your attempts to date and find a true love may not always bring the best result from the beginning, you will still be able to click with someone at some point. And the fact that this person, you just met, went out of her or his way to join the specific Jewish matchmaking service, to find you will make you and your new partner fell appreciative and grateful! Good Luck! Clip-in Hair Extensions - Beautiful Result or Advertising Hype?

Friday, May 9th, 2008

By Tanya Turner What are clip-in hair extensions and how are they attached? Clip-in extensions are perfect if you want to turn your hair into beautiful flowing locks instantly. But, of course, on the down side, they have to be removed at the end of the day. So clip-ins are good for a party, a special date or just whenever you want to look different for a few hours. They are much cheaper than salon-made permanent hair extensions. Another advantage is that clip-ins dont damage your own hair in any way. Quality hair extensions are several strands of hair, each attached individually. Usually 3- or 4-inch wide pieces go on the back of your head in several layers, and a few 1- or 2-inch wide pieces are put on the sides. As the name suggests, each strand is attach to your own hair with a clip. With a little bit of practice, clipping the extensions in becomes rather easy and takes only a few minutes. Taking them off is even easier. You can usually find 14, 16 and 18 clip-in extensions. Anything longer puts too much tension on your own hair. Who can wear clip-in extensions? Clip-in extensions are suitable for people whose natural hair is shoulder length or longer. If you have medium length hair, extensions can make it longer. If you have long but very fine hair, or your hair is not in its best condition, clip-in hair extensions are a great way to bring richness and fullness to your hair. However, clip-in extensions will not work for women with very short hair. Extensions only look natural when they are mixed in with your natural hair, so if your hair is short, people will notice that you are wearing extensions. If you have a short haircut, but are dying for long locks, buy a wig that is similar in color to your natural hair. High quality designers wigs look very natural - nobody will guess that you are wearing a wig unless you tell them. If a wig is not for you, then you can go for salon-made hair extensions that are braided or glued to your own hair. These stay in for several months, but cost significantly more than clip-ins. Do clip-in extensions look natural? It depends on the quality of extensions you get. First, you should know that hair extensions can be made from natural human hair or from synthetic fibers. I will be honest: synthetic hair extensions are cheap, but you get exactly what you pay for. They just dont look right. High quality human hair clip-in extensions, on the other hand, look like they grow from your own head. If you look online, you will find many brands of clip-in extension. It is best to go for a well known maker of hair-pieces and extensions, such as Diva in a Box, PutOnPieces or Raquel Welch. See pictures of clip-in hair extensions (will be a link) from different brands. Since the extensions are mixed in with your own hair, color matching is very important. And the good news is that human hair clip-in extensions can be colored to match your own hair color exactly. However, I wouldnt recommend doing that at home - it is better to color your extensions at the salon. You can also use hot iron on the human hair extensions to curl them a little. How much do they cost? The cost varies greatly, depending on the material. Synthetic hair extensions will cost you less than $100. For a real human hair extensions, you might pay from $200 to $400. However, you can get good discounts through online hair extensions and wigs shops Clip-in hair extensions can be real fun. They will help you to create a different image instantly, which is very important for a busy modern woman. Anxiety Depression and Its Symptoms

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

By Joanne King Current statistics show that at least one out of every four women (compared to one out of ten men) will have some form of depression during their lifetime. Many of these people may not even know that they dont have to suffer, and that there are many treatment options which have been proven effective for battling depression and its symptoms. Along with depression can come many physical side effects. Tremors, muscle aches and pains, profuse sweating, lightheadedness, extreme fatigue, lack of energy, and heart palpitations are all known symptoms that come hand in hand with depression and anxiety disorders. Occasionally, these symptoms may hide the overall problem, making it harder to diagnose and treat effectively. For many, anxiety depression can be literally debilitating. They are no longer able to do the things in life they enjoy, are unable to work, or develop personal relationships. Many feel as though they are trapped inside their own prison, afraid to face the world for fear of criticism and rejection. With todays treatment options, it doesnt have to be this way. People who suffer from anxiety depression and anxiety disorders can lead normal lives, with a little intervention along the way. Those who suffer from anxiety depression need to understand that they are not alone. Thousands of people are diagnosed each year. They should not feel embarrassed or fail to seek treatment because of that embarrassment. If you constantly find yourself feeling sad for no apparent reason, feel as if you have no hope, or are unable to perform your normal day to day activities, you may want to consider talking to your physician. Other possible signs to watch for are loss of appetite, insomnia, inability to concentrate, or the sudden onset of headaches. Often, people who suffer from anxiety depression find themselves having suicidal thoughts. Some studies indicate that depression plays a factor in many of the suicides that take place today. In people age fifteen to twenty-four, suicide is on of the leading causes of death. Suicides caused in part by depression could possibly be avoided with proper treatment. Just in the last decade, there have been many new treatment options developed and proven effective for treating anxiety depression and the symptoms caused by it. In many cases, anxiety depression may occur later in life. When it does strike older people, the two main presenting symptoms are memory loss and lack of mobility, which is often mistaken for other medical conditions, such as stroke or the onset of senility. It is important to understand that depression can affect anyone, no matter how old they are, where they live, or what gender they are. For people who suffer from anxiety depression, it can be a life-altering condition. Realizing that help is available is the first step to recovering from this condition. Talk to your physician about your symptoms and any thoughts or concerns you have. He can develop a plan of treatment that is right for you, possibly including prescription medicines, therapy, or support groups. It will take time, as does recovering from any medical condition, but when it is all over, you will be glad that you recognized the symptoms and sought professional help. Keep the Punch “Fizzing” - A Cool Science Fair Experiment!

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

By Mort Barish Good for students looking for an exciting project, as well as party hosts who want their drinks to last longer. New Year’s Eve as well as other holidays, weddings, birthdays and proms are the right time for a fizzy punch drink. Introduced in India and enjoyed by British sailors during the 1700’s, the idea was brought back to England and quickly became a social tradition for special events. The secret of great punch is effervescence, which describes the foaming or fizzing caused by the gas in the liquid. This effervescence is what makes the bubbles in punch, soda, sparkling wines and beers, and is really carbon dioxide escaping from the beverage. Fizz describes the sound of gas bubbles as they pop when escaping from the drink. Is this wonderful fizzing quality affected by temperatures which are higher or lower than the usual room temperature? You can do this experiment to find out. Here are some suggested materials to use for a science fair project. You will need two hot plates or stove burners. Select at least four of your favorite carbonated beverages such as Coke, Pepsi, Dr. Pepper or 7-Up. Then get enough metal bowls for each beverage you are going to test. Each bowl should be the same size. You will also need two thermometers, and a straw. Label each bowl 180 F, 120 F, Control, Cold Pour 1 can of soda into each of the 4 bowls. With a straw, take a small taste of each soda and record your results. You want to rate the carbonation on a scale from 1-10, 10 being very carbonated. Place the 180 F bowl on a hot plate or burner and heat to 180 degrees F. Maintain that temperature throughout the testing. Place the 120 F bowl on a hot plate or burner and heat to 120 degrees F. Maintain that temperature. Place about 15 ice cubes in the Cold bowl. Every 30 minutes taste a small amount of each to determine carbonation. DO NOT burn yourself on the hot soda. Pour a little into a cup and let cool first. Record all your results. You can test the amount of carbonation by filling a test tube with the liquid, placing a deflated balloon over the top and watch to see how much gas is collected in the balloon. This is a cool science fair experiment that makes science fun. For more cool science fair projects, visit http://www.terimore.com Mort Barish is co-founder of Terimore Institute, Inc.
