Many of these people may not even know that they dont have to suffer, and that there are many treatment options which have been proven effective for battling depression and its symptoms. Along with depression can come many physical side effects. Tremors, muscle aches and pains, profuse sweating, lightheadedness, extreme fatigue, lack of energy, and heart palpitations are all known symptoms that come hand in hand with depression and anxiety disorders. Occasionally, these symptoms may hide the overall problem, making it harder to diagnose and treat effectively. For many, anxiety depression can be literally debilitating. Keep the Punch “Fizzing” - A Cool Science Fair Experiment!

New Year’s Eve as well as other holidays, weddings, birthdays and proms are the right time for a fizzy punch drink. Introduced in India and enjoyed by British sailors during the 1700’s, the idea was brought back to England and quickly became a social tradition for special events. The secret of great punch is effervescence, which describes the foaming or fizzing caused by the gas in the liquid. This effervescence is what makes the bubbles in punch, soda, sparkling wines and beers, and is really carbon dioxide escaping from the beverage. Fizz describes the sound of gas bubbles as they pop when escaping from the drink. Is this wonderful fizzing quality affected by temperatures which are higher or lower than the usual room temperature? You can do this experiment to find out. Here are some suggested materials to use for a science fair project. You will need two hot plates or stove burners. Select at least four of your favorite carbonated beverages such as Coke, Pepsi, Dr. Pepper or 7-Up. Then get enough metal bowls for each beverage you are going to test. Each bowl should be the same size. You will also need two thermometers, and a straw. Label each bowl 180 F, 120 F, Control, Cold Pour 1 can of soda into each of the 4 bowls. With a straw, take a small taste of each soda and record your results. You want to rate the carbonation on a scale from 1-10, 10 being very carbonated. Place the 180 F bowl on a hot plate or burner and heat to 180 degrees F. Maintain that temperature throughout the testing. Place the 120 F bowl on a hot plate or burner and heat to 120 degrees F. Maintain that temperature. Place about 15 ice cubes in the Cold bowl. Every 30 minutes taste a small amount of each to determine carbonation. DO NOT burn yourself on the hot soda. Pour a little into a cup and let cool first. Record all your results. You can test the amount of carbonation by filling a test tube with the liquid, placing a deflated balloon over the top and watch to see how much gas is collected in the balloon. During the time of the country’s consequent President, Fidel RAMOS, who was elected in 1992, political stability was somewhat restored and he made significant progress with the country’s economic reforms. The next President of Philippines, Joseph ESTRADA was elected in 1998 but was succeeded by his vice-president, Gloria MACAPAGAL-ARROYO in January 2001 for a 6-year term. The Island Nation is the 14th most populous country in the world and is the third most in Southeast Asia. The people of the Philippines are mostly Malaya and the people are collectively called Filipinos. The Filipinos have their ancestral decent from Indonesia, though, through a long historical contact between the country and China, there are many from Chinese decent. The original people of the Philippines were non-Malays, and they are known as Negritos. Today the Negritos are few in number and form a very small percentage in the population of the country. These people are mostly found in upland areas, such as, Luzon, Mindanao, Panay, and a few other islands. In the year 1971, an existence of few Tasaday people were found. These people are the previously unknown Negrito tribe and about 25 of them were found to be living in caves, like the days of the Stone Age. Manila is the Capital of the Philippines, located on the eastern shore of Manila Bay in Luzon, and is the country’s largest island. Manila is a thriving metropolis and the population of the city is over 10 million. The metropolitan area of Manila is also known as National Capital Region (NCR), of which the city of Manila is a part. The NCR is a large metropolis and consist of 17 cities and municipalities. The population of the city itself is about 1.5 million, being the second largest populous city in the Philippines. Manila got its name from the Tagalog word ‘nilad’, which has the name from the flowering mangrove plant that grew in abundance along the marshy shores of the bay. During the 16th century a group of Muslims settled along the banks of the Pasig River and this settlement grew into Manila. The Philippines was then under the Spanish rule, who controlled the group of islands for over three centuries from 1565 to 1898. Davao city is the country’s melting pot of diverse cultures. It is the largest city in the world and provides wonderful shopping areas and night life along with many modern amenities. It has accessible beaches, with much supply of sea food and fruits. So, how realistic are the television shows compared to real life courtroom situations? To say the courtroom dramas are a popular subject on television would be a minor understatement. From shows like CSI to Law & Order to whatever happens to draw your attention, the ratings do not lie. Millions upon millions of people watch the shows. In truth, I often watch them. They’re pretty dramatic, but are they a realistic representation of what goes on in a courtroom? The simple answer to the question is yes and no. Are their dramatic moments that occur during a trial regardless of whether it is civil litigation or criminal? Absolutely. Just like you see on television, witnesses are caught in lies and rather stirring arguments are made by legal counsel for both sides. This is particularly true in criminal cases where the subject matter of the trial is usually fairly dramatic. No Debate About Bait: How to Properly Handle Live Bait

During the spring youll often see fishermen trolling the surface of northern reservoirs for lake trout with shiners or suckers. Live minnows are universally popular for catching trout of all types and in all situations. Live bait use, however, comes with some dangers to the environment and possible legal pitfalls to Fishermen. The most important thing an angler can do before employing live bait is to know the law of his or her state. Some states are very restrictive in regards to the movement of live fish species as well as plants and animals. The recurring problem in many fisheries is the introduction of non-native species to lakes or streams that end up damaging or destroying sensitive habitats. For example, Ross Reservoir in Montana had to be poisoned after white suckers appeared in the lake. No doubt these were introduced while being used as a bait fish but ended up destroying a wonderful cutthroat trout fishery for years to come. Some fishermen illegally use goldfish, sunfish, perch and other spiny finned fish for bait. The state of Maine expressly forbids this, yet incidents of these illegal practices continue to be recorded. Horror stories abound, and every state is battling problems with non-native species and diseases. Lampreys and zebra mussels choke the Great Lakes, whirling disease continues to crop up in the western states and some species, such as the Federally threatened Blue Shiner of Alabama, continue to be harvested out of ignorance of the species. Anglers have a responsibility to know the species they will come in contact with and understand how to protect their environment. Mishandling of live bait is another problem in many fisheries. Though the use of a certain type of minnow or bait may be legal in a lake or stream fishermen are warned not to release the bait from their bait-bucket when the day is done. In some places this can be seen as illegal stocking, an activity that requires a permit. Also, it is best to always dispose of water from the bait-bucket on land, not to pour it out in a lake or on a river bank. This helps prevent the transfer of unwanted diseases and plants from place to place. Where the capture of live bait is permitted in a lake that bait should not be transported overland and used elsewhere unless expressly permitted by a particular state’s fishing laws. North Dakota, for example, passed a law four years ago prohibiting the importation of live bait from out of state without a bait dealers license. The threat from nuisance species there includes crawlers, leeches and white suckers to name a few. Even species legal to possess within the state such as fathead minnows cant be imported from out of state. North Dakota has gone as far as to forbid live bait fishing in 22 lakes in an effort to avoid the introduction of fishery destroying pests like the white sucker. If you want bait in North Dakota, buy it in state and know which lake youre fishing. If more fishermen are made aware of how to practice good habits with live bait many current problems plaguing our fisheries can be avoided in the future. The responsibility is a collective one and there should be little tolerance for violations of these laws and restrictions. These guidelines, if followed everywhere, would control many of these problems. - Know your local regulations regarding live bait use - Know and recognize threatened species in your waterways - Dont transport species from lake to lake - Empty buckets on land - Dont use non-native bait - Report violations of the law Remember, if you see trash pick it up and always strive to leave no trace. The oils are extracted from the bark, flower, fruit, grass, leaf, needle, rind, root, seed and wood of various plants and sold in a 100% concentration. Extraction methods make then very highly concentrated. Small amounts are all that you need for most recipes. Contrary to their name, essential oils do not feel oily; most are clear, but some are amber colored. It is important to understand that absolute oils are not the same as essential oils. Various solvents are used during extraction for absolute oils and these oils are used for making fragrances. Extraction may be by steam (or water), expression, or supercritical CO2. These methods each have distinct processes and reasons for using them. Steam: this is the purest and most popular method for extraction plant oils. Plants are steamed in a pressurized container. As the steam pushes through the plant, the oils are evaporated as everything cools, the oils return to their liquid form and are able to be collected. Expression: this method is less popular simply because it cannot be used with most plants; only oils that are locked in the peel of citrus fruits can be extracted by this method. Citrus peels, which are infused with much oil, are pressed. This literally squeezes all liquid from the peel and this liquid must be filtered to collect the oil. Supercritical CO2: this method utilizes carbon dioxide (CO2) in the extraction process and is used to extract oils which emanate the truest fragrance for the plant. Therapeutic grade essential oils are distilled with low pressure and low temperatures, according to the plant that is being used. These oils are used in aroma therapy to achieve various psychological effects. For instance, lavender is considered relaxing while peppermint is invigorating. Inhalation or topical application are the main ways that aromatherapy employs to achieve the desired effects. Important notes: Essential oils should not be used on young children and pregnant women. One that will keep your skin looking great, smells great, is appealing to apply, has actual ‘therapeutic’ effects, and doesn’t break the bank? Look no further than aromatherapy. Creating a wonderful blend just for your skin type with the magic of potent natural botanicals is fun and rewarding in more ways than one. Essential oils are widely used in natural medicine, and some are well-known for their skin rejuvenating effects. While some of the most highly regarded therapeutic grade oils may seem expensive at first, they are effective in such small concentrations as to really make them worthwhile. And their efficacy is well-known; that’s why so many laboratory-made preparations use components of essential oils in their formulas. With a one or two ounce bottle to mix in, and an eye dropper, you can easily mix your own blend with the aroma and actions you desire most. There are a few essential oils and carriers that are highly regarded in natural beauty and skin care. With these, and perhaps one or two extra ingredients, you can make effective (and very pleasant smelling) recipes for a wide variety of skin conditions. The short list of essential oils for skin care Helichrysum (also known as Everlasting) is one of the strongest anti-inflammatory oils known in aromatherapy. It is also very high in regenerative ketones; compounds which stimulate the regeneration of skin cells. Rosemary Verbenone serves a similar function, being thought to enhance metabolic functioning in the dermis layer, increasing circulation and the elimination of waste products. Lavender has properties similar to Helichrysum, with a wonderful, relaxing aroma; it can bring synergy to a combination of oils and is thought to keep the skin in a balanced, healthy condition. Carrot Seed essential oil is also regenerating, bringing life to tired, pallid skin. Palmarosa essential oil can be included for it’s pleasing aroma and anti-septic effects; Niaouli is also recommended for the same reasons, along with it’s skin-firming properties. This is only a few of the many essential oils included in skin formulas, though these are considered among the most important for their broad range of effects. Almost any essential oil can be added to a blend in balanced quantities. In many cases, oils are added as much for their lovely aroma as their direct therapeutic benefits to skin tissue. Many aromatherapists, and natural health professionals for that matter, consider the overall mental and emotional condition to be of primary importance in creating an appearance of fitness and beauty. Many citrus and floral oils are used for this reason Neroli, distilled from the flowers of the bitter orange tree, is an often used example. Others are Jasmine, Sandalwood (very popular in Men’s skin care), Geranium and Ylang Ylang. Essential oils, be they for direct effects on skin metabolism, or for the overall state of wellness of the user, will be diluted in a carrier oil, sometimes known as a base oil. It is important to note that diluting the oils will often actually enhance their effects; essential oils are often too strong to be used directly, and many studies have shown increased efficacy in dilutions down to 1% or less of the total formula. The carrier oils serve several other functions as well; they “carry” the essential oils into the skin, increasing their total absorption. They also nourish the middle and lower layers of the skin with essential fatty acids or EFA’s compounds now considered critical to the health of all living tissues. Further, some carrier oils have vitamin analogs which assist in skin regeneration and repair. A few of the most important carrier oils include the following: Rosehip Seed Oil is highly regarded for it’s regenerating effects for skin which has been over-exposed to the sun or has other damage. It includes a variety of Vitamin A which acts to increase cellular turnover, similar to Retin-A without the over-drying side effects. Numerous scientific studies have validated this oil’s positive effects on damaged or prematurely aged skin. Next is Evening Primrose Oil, which has a significant quantities of gamma-linolenic acid, an important essential fatty acid. Evening Primrose oil has been used to support skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema, and may help premature skin aging. Finally, Hazelnut oil is possibly the most commonly used base oil for skin care; it is gentle, has little aroma, and is suitable for all skin types. Often, small amounts of Rosehip seed and/or Evening Primrose oil will be included in a blend, with Hazelnut oil comprising the majority of the carrier mixture. Here are several blends categorized by skin type to get you started. For normal skin, used at any time: In each ounce of Hazelnut Oil, add 15 drops Thyme Linalool, 15 drops Rosemary Verbenone, 15 drops Neroli, and 15 drops Spike Lavender; this blend can work well for acne with it’s antiseptic properties, but is an excellent tonic for all skin types. If your skin has been chemically damaged, is overly-sensitive, or otherwise ‘weakened’ with broken capillaries, try this mixture, applying frequently: For each ounce of base oil, use three parts Hazelnut, one part Rosehip Seed, and one part Evening Primrose. Add the following essential oils: fifteen drops Moroccan Chamomile, fifteen drops Helichrysum, fifteen drops true Lavender, and fifteen drops Roman Chamomile. The Helichrysum, Lavender and Rosehip seed will enhance the skin’s own natural metabolism, and the addition of the Chamomiles will greatly reduce inflammation that is found with almost all damage and/or aging. If your skin is prone to acne, or has over-active sebaceous glands, the following blend can be of great assistance. It contains regenerative, antiseptic, and cleansing oils. Simply use Hazelnut as the base, and to each ounce include fifteen drops of Green Myrtle or Inula graveolens, fifteen drops Eucalyptus dives (because of the ketones in this oil, it should not be used if pregnant or under 10 years of age but is otherwise considered safe), fifteen drops Spike Lavender, and fifteen drops Rosemary verbenone. If your skin has no particular ‘condition’, but appears tired, lifeless, pallid, or ‘worn out’, try mixing one-fifth ounce of Rosehip Seed and four-fifths ounce Hazelnut oil. Then add 15 drops each of Carrot Seed essential oil (also known as Queen Anne’s Lace or Wild Carrot), Lemon verbena (which helps the skin detoxify), Niaouli (gently tightening the skin), and Rosemary verbenone this creates an excellent restorative blend. For aging skin needing firming that can be used around the eyes try this more gentle variety: Mix in five ounces of Hazelnut oil and one ounce of Rosehip seed oil, add fifteen drops of each of Myrtle essential oil (green), Cistus or Rock Rose and Rosemary. So there are a few tried-and-true aromatherapy skin care blends to use in your natural beauty regime. You can easily mix and match the oils described to create your own blend, and add any oils you really like the aroma of (be aware that a FEW essential oils are VERY strong, and should not be used on the skin the more common of these include Cinnamon, Clove, Oregano, and Red Thyme consult with a knowledgeable practitioner if you are unsure about the safety of any oil). A word about purchasing oils for your blends do NOT use anything labeled as a ‘fragrance oil’ these are synthetic reproductions of essential oils that will likely cause an allergic reaction. DO seek out a reputable source. And oils, like wine, do vary greatly from maker to maker. A higher price can mean a significantly nicer oil (though not always) one that is sweeter, or more well-rounded only a few oils should smell ‘medicinal’ Spike Lavender is a little ‘camphorus’ in general but a good Rosemary verbenone should have a very appealing scent . Despite the initial outlay, you are more likely to continue to use a blend that you really like the aroma of, and that has therapeutic effects. Though once you find the oils you adore, you’re more than likely to continue the practice of making your own blends for some time to come.
